What initially sounds unusual has long been a reality for the North German artist DJ GerreG. Last year alone, he was able to save 25 dogs from so-called kill shelters – financed by his performances, his music, and the support of his community.
But behind this number lies a truth, that many people don't want to see.
A reality many repress
What's behind this number is really not a pretty story.
It's a brutal reality that many don't want to see – or consciously suppress – right in the middle of Europe.
In several European countries, dogs are housed in state-run shelters.
Animal welfare organizations such as Four paws, the German Animal Welfare Federation or PETA have been criticizing for years that animals are euthanized there after a certain period if they are not adopted – a practice that is partly co-financed by public funds.
A particularly frequently cited example is Romania:

Scared. Hopeful. And often without a chance.
Thousands of dogs are held in so-called holding stations – often referred to as killing stations – abroad. In the middle of Europe.
Scared. Abandoned. Hopeful.
You are looking for eye contact. Closeness. Affection.
You wag your tail when someone walks by.
You hope – until the last moment.
Until someone comes.
Until someone sees them.
And then, for many, their lives end right there.
Dogs that nobody adopts, nobody sees, nobody rescues, have little chance.
After a few days (usually only 14 days), their time is up.
Then their lives often end agonizingly – not infrequently under conditions that are unimaginable for us humans and only extremely difficult to bear.
These animals are treated as if they are a problem to be „solved.“ Not as living beings. Not as sentient beings.

Animals treated in such „rescue stations“ as if they were trash – and disposed of in trash bags, often after being tortured to death.

Engagement that goes far beyond music
But DJ GerreG's commitment doesn't end with the 25 rescued dogs.
A special place in my heart is the Animal Welfare Hope e.V. – The Smeura – the largest animal shelter in the world with approximately 6,000 rescued dogs. Particularly noteworthy: This animal shelter was built directly in front of a kill shelter, to make a statement precisely where countless animals’ hope once ended.
In addition, DJ GerreG regularly supports other organizations that work worldwide for animals and people. These include, among others, the Four Paws – Foundation for the Protection of Animals, which is internationally committed to the protection of domestic, farm, and wild animals, as well as the World Animal Protection Society Inc., which operates in more than 20 countries and provides much-needed aid to animals. The organization is also supported by WWF Germany.
Social projects for people are also close to his heart. Among other things, support is provided for Little Hearts Hanover Inc., Light for the world, the Children's Hospice St. Mary's Bridge in Hamburg and Children's Laughter e.V..
